Telenor Group and Alcatel-Lucent pen 4G deal

Telenor Group and French vendor Alcatel-Lucent have signed a global framework agreement for the delivery of 4G LTE networks across Europe and Asia.

Alcatel-Lucent will provide technology for the networks to Telenor subsidiaries in 13 countries across the regions.

“We are very pleased with this agreement where Alcatel-Lucent is providing our subsidiaries with an attractive opportunity to forcefully adopt the rapidly evolving 4G LTE technology,” said Hilde Tonne, EVP of group industrial development at Telenor Group.

“This agreement directly supports our strategy for the coming years and will provide Telenor’s customers with the best possible customer experience delivered by the most efficient and robust network technology and architecture,” Tonne added.

Alcatel-Lucent will deliver its 4G LTE overlay solution, rather than use single RAN technology, in a bid to provide operators with faster and more cost-effective deployment.

The solution from Alcatel-Lucent is designed to enable LTE services to be launched over the top of existing mobile infrastructure, removing the need for time and cost-intensive upgrades.

“This agreement underlines the strength of relationship Alcatel-Lucent enjoys with Telenor, and the relevance of its expertise and focus on ultra-broadband access technology,” said Luis Martinez, president of EMEA at Alcatel-Lucent.

“The agreement clears the path for us to enter negotiations on our 4G LTE overlay solution with Telenor’s subsidiaries throughout Europe and Asia, and follows a number of other major agreements we have made with Telenor over the last few years which have included small cells, IP transport and mobile video product solutions.”
