Hibernia Networks completes transatlantic upgrade

Hibernia Networks has selected vendor Ciena’s advanced optical solutions to upgrade its platform; starting with the operator’s transatlantic system.

Hibernia will deploy Ciena’s GeoMesh submarine solution to lay the foundations for an OPn network architecture to enable Hibernia to scale and react to changing transatlantic traffic patterns.

“We look forward to growing our relationship with Ciena as our customers evolve their connectivity needs in support of their own global web-scale approaches to infrastructure virtualisation, through solutions like CDN, IP, Ethernet and 100G,” said Matt Jonson, SVP of product strategy at Hibernia Networks.

Ciena’s GeoMesh solution includes its 6500 packet optical platform, WaveLogic coherent optics as well as full ROADM, and Hibernia will also leverage Ciena’s OneConnect intelligent control plane platform for the delivery of end-to-end service provisioning and creation.

“Driven by a need to get increased value from their existing assets, submarine cable operators continue to turn to Ciena for flexible and programmable trans-oceanic GeoMesh networking capabilities,” said Ed McCormack, VP and GM of submarine systems at Ciena.

“This scalable and intelligent network architecture will position Hibernia to generate new revenue streams by quickly and easily introducing new services,” he added.

Hibernia has also joined Ciena’s BizConnect partner programme as part of the agreement, which provides a comprehensive go-to-market strategy, including marketing, training and technical support, to enable Hibernia to find new customers and industries in North America and Europe.

Hibernia is working with Ciena to develop sales opportunities in a number of public sector areas.
