Rostelecom purchase assets in Crimea

Russia’s state-owned operator Rostelecom reportedly acquired infrastructure in the Crimea region, including telecommunications equipment and fibre optical networks with a total length of 2,000 km.

The assets were acquired from Ukrainian operators Datagroup, Atracom and a third unspecified operator, in a deal that is estimated at around $30 million, according to local sources.

The news follows calls from Russia’s prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, for Rostelecom to launch telecoms services in Crimea.

Rostelecom has also been negotiating the purchase of assets in Crimea with Ukrtelecom, the Ukraine’s largest fixed-line operator, but no deal was reached due to disagreement on the price.

Sources report that the company can start to serve a full scale network to subscribers in the region immediately as the infrastructure is already built.
