China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom are in talks to form a joint network-sharing venture. The companies reportedly hope to speed up the process of LTE roll-out, reduce the cost of network construction and share the operating cost through a tower-sharing deal. [read more]

Taiwan’s National Communication Commission (NCC) has given three companies in the country permission to launch commercial 4G services. Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone secured spectrum in the country's auction last year, and have now been permitted to launch commercial 4G services this year, according to local reports. Equinix has launched the Equinix Cloud Exchange, an advanced interconnection solution designed to allow on-demand access to multiple clouds and networks worldwide. UK telecoms watchdog Ofcom has published a spectrum-management plan which sets out a strategy for the country’s wireless infrastructure for the next ten years. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Tom Wheeler has said he will prevent ISPs from restricting user access to web content. Consumers have hit out at the latest proposals from the FCC, which indicated that net neutrality rules could be passed which would mean content companies will have to pay broadband providers for faster internet speeds. Juniper Networks has launched a solution designed to help operators increase capacity by nearly 10 times. The Virtual Converged Cable Access Platform (Virtual CCAP) has been launched in collaboration with Gainspeed, following Juniper's investment in the company last October. [read more]

German cable operator Unitymedia Kabel has announced a partnership with US-based network specialist Ciena for its 100G technology. Ciena will implement its 100G coherent optical transport platform in order to upgrade Unitymedia's backbone network in Germany. [read more]



The Irish government plans to invest €512 million ($708.9 million) to ensure countrywide coverage of broadband and to address deficits of the service. The government has agreed on a network build-out plan to deliver fibre connectivity to 1,100 villages and districts in rural Ireland, according to minister for communications Pat Rabbitte. South Africa’s Vodacom has won a tender for the roll-out of telecommunications services to rural areas of Tanzania, according to local reports. The deal is part of the Tanzanian government's Communications Infrastructure and e-Government Project (RCIP Tanzania) designed to provide higher-quality infrastructure in the country. [read more]
