Vodacom Tanzania wins rural tender

South Africa’s Vodacom has won a tender for the roll-out of telecommunications services to rural areas of Tanzania, according to local reports.

The deal is part of the Tanzanian government’s Communications Infrastructure and e-Government Project (RCIP Tanzania) designed to provide higher-quality infrastructure in the country.

The tender will see Vodacom Tanzania deploy services to 466 villages, covering approximately one million people in the country, Rene Meza, managing director at Vodacom Tanzania, told local reporters.

The value of the tender has not been disclosed, but it will reportedly be funded by the International Development Association in Tanzania.

In October last year, Vodacom Tanzania signed a deal with NSN for the upgrade of its GSM and 3G networks.
