Ciena upgrades German cable network with 100G technology

German cable operator Unitymedia Kabel has today announced a partnership with US-based network specialist Ciena for its 100G technology.

Ciena will implement its 100G coherent optical transport platform in order to upgrade Unitymedia’s backbone network in Germany.

The upgrade will enable Unitymedia to increase the flexibility of its network, as well as reduce operating costs and latency.

“It is important for cable operators to extend their own infrastructure to meet growing demands and this is made possible by our converged packet optical platform,” said Eugen Gebhard, regional director for Germany and pan-European carrier accounts at Ciena.

“It also enables higher data speeds and new applications so that customer expectations can also be met in the future,” he added.

Ciena’s platform is also designed to be easily upgraded to 400G, to meet the growing demands for OTT services such as video streaming.

“Demand among residential customers is growing for broadband-intensive entertainment services such as music and video streaming, downloading multimedia content or online video games,” said Michael Langer, director of network engineering at Unitymedia Kabel.

“With Ciena’s platform we are tailoring our network to the needs of our customers. We have a flexible and scalable architecture, which we can adapt dynamically if customer requirements change.”

Ciena signed an agreement with Tata Communications in January this year to upgrade its cable systems connecting the US and Asia.
