Reliance Communications, Tata and Aircel collaborate for 3G roaming

Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices and Aircel have announced a tripartite agreement to deliver 3G roaming services to each other’s customers in India.

Reliance and Aircel have permits for 3G in 13 out of 22 service areas, while Tata Teleservices has permits in nine.

Gurdeep Singh, CEO of consumer business at Reliance, told local reporters that the agreement makes Reliance Communications the first operator to offer 3G national roaming to its customers.

“These alliances will further consolidate Reliance’s position as the leading data operator in the country and will help the company improve its post-paid and corporate customer market share,” Singh said.

Reliance Communications’ circles comprise Delhi, Mumbai Kolkata, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, North East, Jammu and Kashmir.

Tata’s part in the agreement will allow Reliance access to the additional areas of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and UP west, while Aircel will deliver access to Andhra Pradesh, Kanataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and UP East.

Tata and Aircel will benefit from access to expensive areas of Delhi and Mumbai where Reliance has access.

Earlier this month, Reliance Communications signed a third infrastructure-sharing agreement with Reliance Industries and in February, it appointed former Bharti executive Vinod Sawhny as CEO.
