AT&T to expand US fibre network

AT&T has announced that it expects to expand its ultra-fast fibre network and TV services to include an additional 21 cities across the US.

According to Reuters, the US company is considering delivering broadband internet speeds of up to 1Gbps, as well as its U-verse TV services, in a bid to compete with rival Google.

The expansion is expected to include Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Miami, but AT&T has to make agreements with local leaders in each city before entering these markets.

AT&T operates its fibre network in Austin, Texas, as well as some surrounding areas, and has said it may consider expanding its reach to 100 cities in the future.

In February this year, Google revealed plans to build high-speed fibre networks in nine metropolitan areas.
