Zain Jordan acquires LTE frequencies

Zain Jordan has reportedly acquired LTE frequencies for 142 million dinars ($199.8 million) and will launch the service in the country at the end of this year.

The company has bought LTE frequencies in addition to other spectrum to enhance and expand its 3G network, according to the country’s ICT minister Azzam Sleit.

Local reports in Jordan are suggesting the Zain has been the big winner in the bidding process for 4G, after the government also invited Orange Jordan and Umniah to submit requests. The government had already turned down bids from Kulacom Jordan and US-based Ameriphone, because the offers did not comply with conditions.

Chief commissioner of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Mohammed Taani confirmed that Zain Jordan’s bid was not exclusive, and two other operators were still welcome to apply for 4G.

Other operators have reportedly maintained an interest in entering the 4G space.

According to the TRC, mobile penetration in the country reached 156% by the end of 2013.
