Mobiltel pays out €30.6 million to extend Bulgarian spectrum licence

Bulgarian network operator Mobiltel (M-Tel) – a subsidiary of the Telekom Austria Group – has paid €30.6 million in order to renew its operating licence, which expires in June 2014.

The investment has prolonged its existing pair of 11.2 MHz blocks in the 900MHz spectrum band and two 10 MHz blocks in the 1800MHz spectrum band for another ten years, until 8 June 2024.

In addition to the one-off extension cost, Mobiltel must also pay an annual spectrum fee of €2.2 million.

Rivals Cosmo Bulgaria (GloBul) and Vivacom will also be subject to the tariff when their operating licences expire.

Telekom Austria announced at the end of March this year that it had successfully completed a trial of 400Gbps technology between Zagreb, Croatia and Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The trial, conducted between February 24 and March 6 this year, ran 400Gbps technology on Telekom Austria’s existing fibre-optic cables.
