Viatel invests in Irish network upgrade

Pan-European network provider Viatel has invested a reported €1.5 million in the upgrade of its network across Ireland.

The upgrade will include the deployment of 1,500km of fibre spanning Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Galway.

“This network upgrade quadruples the capacity available from Viatel and is a clear response by the company to continue our investment programme across all the markets that we operate in,” said Colm Piercy, CEO of Viatel.

“[The upgrade] will benefit all our customers throughout Ireland, as well as our European customers, taking connectivity solutions to support their Irish sites,” he added.

Viatel merged with Dublin-based Digiweb in May last year, creating an operator designed to connect 35 western European cities with an 8,500km fibre network.

Work on the network upgrade started earlier this year, and is designed to cover all major metropolitan areas.

Last month, Viatel became a member of the Metro2C Alliance.
