Telefónica to provide satellite Wifi on Vueling Airlines aircraft

Telefónica has entered into a partnership to provide Wifi via satellite to Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling Airlines.

According to the agreement, Telefónica will install satellite terminals to four of the airline’s Airbus A320s.

Telefónica has selected French operator Eutelsat to provide the satellite network and mobile service, using Eutelsat’s KA-SAT satellite.

Airline in-flight entertainment system LiveTV is in the process of obtaining permission from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for the use of this technology in Vueling's Airbus A320s. The partnership will see LiveTV onboard systems being integrated into the aircraft.

The service will be available on the four aircraft by the end of this year.

Telefónica claims the announcement marks the first time that data access of this kind has been made possible during short-haul European flights.
