Far EasTone selects Ericsson for LTE

Taiwanese operator Far EasTone has today signed an agreement with Swedish vendor Ericsson for the roll-out of a nationwide LTE network in Taiwan.

Ericsson will stand as Far EasTone’s major LTE supplier for the deployment, delivering a multi-access RAN and core network for both 3G and 4G services.

Far EasTone expects the LTE network to provide customers in Taiwan with 150Mbps download and 50Mbps upload speeds.

"We are looking forward to this 4G implementation and offering our users an improved experience in terms of smartphone and mobile broadband usage in a very competitive market,” said Yvonne Li, president of Far EasTone.

The network will be supported by both the 700MHz and 1800MHz bands to ensure seamless coverage.

Ericsson will also deploy its 4G cell broadcast system (CBS) to enable the delivery of disaster warning services to the Taiwanese government.

"We are pleased to extend our successful long-term partnership with Far EasTone by providing them with our LTE radio and core network,” said Jan Signell, head of north east Asia region at Ericsson. “Far EasTone will now be able to offer its customers improved speeds and reliability, with the opportunity to expand as future needs grow.”

The deal follows a number of LTE announcements in Taiwan, including those from Asia Pacific Telecom (APT) and Taiwan Mobile in March this year.
