ORION and Alcatel-Lucent team up to trial 400G

French vendor Alcatel-Lucent has partnered with Ontario Research and Innovation Optical Network (ORION) for 400G optical network trials.

The trial is said to be the fastest optical data rate on a live research network in North America.

The test was conducted between ORION’s PoP in Toronto and another PoP located inside York University’s campus in North York.

“Ontario’s research, education and innovation communities depend on ORION’s digital infrastructure to develop solutions for the world’s toughest problems,” said Darin Graham, CEO and president of ORION.

“Our users’ needs continue to expand exponentially, making this field test critical in preparing for future demand. ORION and Ontario will be ready,” Graham added.

ORION’s 400G-capable network opens up opportunities for researchers, educators and innovators in Ontario as they collaborate on local, national and international projects.

“Along with the 400G capability comes more dynamic and efficient control of the network, so it will evolve ahead of user demands and new network cloud architectures,” said Marc-Anthony Bellini, CTO of Alcatel-Lucent Canada.

Last month, Telekom Austria announced that it successfully completed a trial of 400Gbps technology between Zagreb, Croatia and Ljubljana, Slovenia.
