NTT DoCoMo sets Japanese LTE capex at $4 billion

Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo is planning to spend approximately $4 billion in capex to expand its LTE network to all regions of the country.

Most of Japan is already covered by 3G, but with over a third of Japanese mobile subscribers using LTE, the company has made the decision to expand the service.

The company will also increase its number of LTE base stations by 40,000 to 100,000 – which is reportedly equal to its 3G service.

Across the border in China, China Mobile has said it will increase its capex by 22% to $36.34 billion, with one third of the spend going towards the 4G service it launched in December. Of its 2014 capex budget, 44% will go on LTE network spend, 28% on transmission and 5% for support services.

NTT DoCoMo’s revenue for the year ending in December 2013 fell by 2% to $32.85 billion, while its net profit rose by 3.8%.
