Etisalat reveals first LTE-A network for UAE

UAE operator Etisalat has partnered with Alcatel-Lucent to deploy LTE Advanced technology for what it claims is the first time in the region.

The move will allow operators to take full advantage of their existing spectrum assets by combining multiple spectrum bands, enabling higher mobile broadband download speeds.

The technology is built on carrier aggregation techniques and uses the 1800MHz and 800MHz bands.

"Advanced technologies adopted by Etisalat have set a benchmark for other companies to follow by increasing mobile broadband speeds and enhancing customer experience,” said Saeed Al Zarouni, SVP of business planning and technology evolution at the company.

“The capacity, higher data speeds and efficiencies provided by LTE-A will help manage growth in data traffic as more customers choose our network,” he added.

Etisalat announced that it is investing heavily into the fibre-optic network connecting its 4G LTE base stations and is in the process of introducing additional stations to cover main roads, buildings, airports and shopping centres.

"By the end of 2014, the 4G LTE network will comprise 4,000 base stations," added Al Zarouni.

Last month, Etisalat signed a content agreement with broadcasting firm Abu Dhabi Media. Under the terms of the deal, Etisalat’s customers will benefit from access to on-demand content via TVs, PCs, smartphones and tablets.
