KPN launches cloud application platform

Dutch telco KPN has partnered with Open-Xchange to offer an app suite through the Dutch operator’s Open Cloud Store.

Open-Xchange’s collaboration and productivity platform – the OX App Suite – will allow KPN customers to access applications for email, calendar, contacts, file management and social network integration.

Market experts have pointed out that operators are increasingly looking to developing OTT services as a way to monetise their network.

“Service providers put a lot of emphasis on customer retention and reducing their churn. Adding ‘sticky’ or value-added services in the form of collaborative tools and storage is an excellent way of increasing loyalty,” said Rafael Laguna, CEO of Open-Xchange.

“Service providers that do not start offering storage, sharing and productivity apps do not only risk losing another slice of the pie to the big internet companies – but seriously run the risk of permanently losing their customers in the long run,” Laguna added.

Last month, KPN launched a live TV service trial over its 4G network. The trial will run over three months and will involve 2,000 selected customers who have subscribed to KPN’s quad-play service.
