Vodafone to expand 4G footprint in Spain

Vodafone Spain has announced that all provincial capitals in the country will have 4G coverage from April 1 2014.

Utilising the 1800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum bands, Vodafone will deploy LTE to over 220 municipalities, including 80 cities with over 70,000 inhabitants.

Outdoor coverage will exceed 90% of the population in eight of the largest cities in Spain and 80% in 32 major cities.

At the same time, Vodafone announced that it has reinforced its LTE coverage in areas with high-density traffic, including 12 airports throughout the country, 10 railway stations, 30 large-scale venues and 20 football stadiums.

The operator reported that it is waiting for the release of spectrum in the 800MHz band to accelerate the deployment of 4G and improve coverage inside buildings. At present it is used by TV stations and will be made available once the switchover from analogue to digital TV broadcasting in Spain has been fully completed.

Earlier this month, Vodafone confirmed it will acquire Spanish cable operator Ono for €7.2 billion ($10 billion).
