Orange and SIA to launch mobile payment solution

Orange Business Services and e-payment technology vendor SIA have signed an agreement that will allow payments to be made via mobile point of sale (PoS) terminals.

The partnership will see Orange provide an M2M solution with global roaming services, and the technology will enable PoS terminals to transmit payment data to SIA’s technology infrastructure, which SIA will then deliver to the authorisation systems of banks, terminal operators and other acquirers.

“Thanks to the Orange Business Services solution, from today we are able to simplify further the communications between merchants and banks by offering payments also via mobile PoS terminals at continental level,” said Andrea Galeazzi, director of the network services division at SIA.

The move complements SIA’s plan to create a single payment operating network at the European level. SIA has enabled almost 5,000 mobile PoS terminals and plans to reach around 60,000 terminals by the end of the year.

“With our solid track record in the financial services market, Orange Business Services combines a deep vertical knowledge, mobile managed services and machine-to-machine expertise with its unmatched global network reach,” said Helmut Reisinger, SVP at Orange Business Services Europe, Russia & CIS.

“This unique services skill set makes Orange Business Services a perfect match for a company like SIA, that is deploying a global, seamless M2M solution customised for the finance sector,” he added.

Orange announced earlier this month that it is reviewing its operations in Kenya and Uganda, which could result in it selling its stakes in both countries.
