Viatel joins METRO2C Alliance

European network provider Viatel today revealed that it has joined the METRO2C Alliance.

Part of the Digiweb Group, Viatel has invested $1.5 billion in constructing a low-latency 8,500km fibre network connecting 35 European cities, over 120 data centres and Europe’s leading internet exchanges.

The METRO2C Alliance now claims to connect more enterprises than ever before through its new member, with extensive local access and a range of data services to Europe’s largest cities, financial centres and internet hubs.

Colm Piercy, CEO at Digiweb Group said: “Joining the METRO2C Alliance strengthens the Viatel brand in new markets and further demonstrates our commitment to Ireland.”

The METRO2C Alliance unites terrestrial and submarine networks that use their global footprint for internet and data communications. Its collaboration with Viatel is also designed to enable the Alliance to enhance its coverage in key European cities, including Lyon, Marseille, Strasbourg, Geneva and Milan, with onward connectivity into the Middle East and Africa.

“Bringing enterprises closer to consumers is at the core of the Alliance’s strategy and working with established providers like Viatel, with their dense fibre footprint, eliminates digital enterprise growth barriers,” said Diane Hodnett, CEO at Sea Fibre Networks.
