Switzerland revises network access pricing rules

Switzerland’s telecoms regulator, Bundesamt fur Kommunikation (Bakom), has updated the rules on pricing regarding access to incumbent Swisscom’s network.

The fees imposed payable to Swisscom for access to its network by rival companies will continue to be based on the costs incurred during construction of a new network. However, the rules now take new technology developments into consideration.

“Until now the costs for accessing the last mile were based on a copper network and traditional switching equipment. Today, an operator would not construct a new copper network, but would instead lay optical fibre,” Bakom said in a statement.

The revised rules will come into force in July this year and will be phased in over a period of three years.

According to Bakom, the new rules are expected to reduce the regulated access prices among telecom providers.
