Huawei has been selected by UK-based Vodafone to expand a Single Radio Access Network (SingleRAN) as part of its Project Spring phase 1 programme, which it is implementing across the world. Under the terms of the five-year agreement, Huawei will deliver a number of network enhancement projects, including products and services for Vodafone’s radio access networks in 15 countries. Russian incumbent Rostelecom has revealed it deployed network security solutions from software company Nominum to protect its Wifi hotspot users from cyber-threats at the recent Sochi Winter Olympics. The solution, Vantio ThreatAvert, was deployed across Rostelecom’s free Wifi hotspots earlier this year to protect its network from the sudden influx of visitors expected to use the service in the city, while providing a more reliable internet experience. Tata Communications has expanded its global footprint by signing an agreement with Turkish operator Turkcell for improved connectivity in the region. Under the agreement, Tata will deploy a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) PoP in Istanbul, designed to connect customers in Turkey and neighbouring countries to Tata’s MPLS and Ethernet networks. Optical transport provider Infinera and Spanish network operator Telefónica have collaborated to demonstrate the use of software defined networking (SDN) to support Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) capabilities in a multi-layer environment. The demonstration allowed end users to define MPLS services from a single screen, Infinera reported in a statement. [read more]

Belgian telco BICS has launched a remote peering solution to allow smaller communication service providers (CSPs) to cost-effectively expand their network footprints. BICS’ solution will offer access to exchange points across its own infrastructure, meaning CSPs and ISPs can peer without a physical presence at the peering point. [read more]

Qatari carrier Ooredoo has been certified by the Algerian telecoms watchdog to deploy 3G services in nine additional provinces. In December last year the carrier’s subsidiary Ooredoo Algeria, formerly known as Nedjma, launched what it claimed to be the first commercial 3G network in Algeria. [read more]

Hurricane Electric has expanded its presence in the Asia-Pacific market with a connection into the BBIX internet exchange in Tokyo, Japan. Hurricane’s presence at BBIX is expected to provide customers of the exchange with reduced latency, improved fault tolerance and access to the co-location provider’s IPv4 and IPv6 network.
