Huawei launches NFV solution

Huawei has launched a solution for implementing Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) capabilities on mobile broadband networks.

Cloud Edge is designed to automate network management, enabling operators a faster-time-to–market for new services, such as M2M applications, mobile video and mobile enterprise.

It also aims to simplify network maintenance, reduce costs for architecture network operations and enhance network resource utilisation.

The solution forms part of Huawei’s SoftCOM roadmap, with the vendor aiming to introduce advances in cloud, NFV and SDN technologies into the global telecoms market over the next ten years.

Huawei has in particular tried to position itself as a leader in NFV standardisation. It is an active member of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute’s NFV Industry Specification Group (ETSI NFV ISG) and is said to have submitted more than 280 contributions to the group.

Huawei states that it has completed rigorous Cloud Edge trials with global operators in Europe and Asia-Pacific, including applications for M2M, MVNO and service chaining.

One of the emerging technologies to watch in 2014, rival vendors have also been actively pursuing opportunities in the NFV space through a number of trials with operators.

One such vendor is Alcatel-Lucent whichi today announced that it is developing its NFV technology in partnership with China Mobile.
