London-based cloud operator Interoute has announced the opening of a new data centre in Madrid, Spain, which is built into the operator's European network. Interoute's first location in Spain will allow the company to meet growing demand for connectivity, hosting and cloud services in the region. [read more]

Iran has unveiled a domestically designed and manufactured telecoms satellite, designed to provide secure national and international satellite mobile connections. According to local sources, the satellite was produced by researchers at Malek Ashtar University of Technology and was unveiled at a ceremony in Tehran, attended by Iranian president Hassan Rouhani and other senior government officials. The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) will launch its own IXP in the country, an executive officer revealed at Capacity Caribbean 2014 in the Dominican Republic. The IXP is due to launch in Q2 of 2014, and Kwesi Prescod, executive officer of policy, planning and economics at the TATT, expects it to allow for faster, more efficient information transfers within the region. Ethernet network solutions provider Extreme Networks has announced the launch of its network solution Purview. The "first-of-breed product" is designed to provide businesses in a range of sectors with the knowledge needed to maximise network performance and improve user experience, Steve Johnson, regional director at Extreme Networks told Capacity upon the launch. Japanese telecoms company NTT Communications has announced the launch of US and European platforms for its cloud-based enterprise communications service, Arcstar UCaaS. Arcstar UCaaS integrates VoIP phones, web and audio conferencing, instant messaging and other collaboration tools in the cloud. The platform is now operating in three regions – Japan, Europe and the US – allowing NTT customers to unify their global communications structure, rather than operate on independent systems in each region. Bandwidth infrastructure provider euNetworks has extended its contract with the German freight and warehousing exchange TimoCom. The UK-based company has been awarded a multi-year deal to deliver bandwidth to TimoCom’s new data centre in Düsseldorf. [read more]

French vendor Alcatel-Lucent has signed an agreement with the Libyan International Telecommunication Company (LITC) to build a new 1,000km subsea cable linking Tripoli to Benghazi. Utilising Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G technology, the system will carry capacity of 10Tbps per fibre pair and is expected to be ready in middle of 2015.[read more]

Bandwidth infrastructure provider Zayo has announced that it is expanding its fibre footprint in the network east of London by building a 53 mile fibre network in London, Essex. Zayo’s extended network which stretches between the UK towns of Stratford, Romford and Thurrock, will be fully operational in the second quarter of 2014. [read more]

The Venezuelan telecoms market has installed 70.2% of its nationwide optic network, according to local reports. Under the terms of the project, 6,886km of optical fibre has been deployed, with regulators claiming the system will interconnect the southern half of the country with the north coastal region, implementing 213 nodes in 18 states. [read more]

EE and Three UK have announced a 4G network sharing deal which revises the terms of a prior infrastructure agreement between the two companies.[read more]

French operator SFR is expecting to save approximately €200 million a year from its network sharing agreement with Bouygues Telecom, after it begins in 2017-2018. The company’s CEO Jean Yves Charlier said in the initial years of the deal, the companies will be required to spend hundreds of millions in taking down mobile antennas, but savings would eventually materialise.
