TATT to launch Trinidad and Tobago IXP

The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) will launch its own IXP in the country, an executive officer revealed at Capacity Caribbean 2014 in the Dominican Republic yesterday morning.

The IXP is due to launch in Q2 of 2014, and Kwesi Prescod, executive officer of policy, planning and economics at the TATT, expects it to allow for faster, more efficient information transfers within the region.

Speaking on a regulatory panel session on day one of the event, Prescod said: “The IXP will have the effect of encouraging more data hosting within each of the Caribbean islands.”

Prescod explained that each Caribbean island has different demographics and situations, and he hopes the IXP will encourage more data creation, as well as offshore data storage in the region.

“North America may actually consider Caribbean-based infrastructure as a result,” he added.

The second day of the two-day conference takes place today in Santo Domingo.
