Ooredoo and Norway’s Telenor were announced as the winners of the lucrative licences by regulators in the country in June last year and will be charged with developing a telecoms network in one the world’s last untapped markets.
A ceremony is planned on Thursday in the country’s capital Naypyidaw, after the formal presentation of the award was delayed as the government finished writing its telecoms laws.
Reuters reports that Telenor’s signing ceremony will take place on February 3, although this has not yet been confirmed.
Ooredoo plans to build a network in the country that aims to cover Myanmar’s four biggest cities within six months, and 97% of the population in the next five years.
Myanmar took the decision to open up its telecoms market to international players after years of state monopoly in the sector.
Since 2011, the country has embarked on numerous political and economic reforms, with telecoms key to Myanmar’s future growth.
