Elisa and NSN launch first 4G network in Finland

Finnish operator Elisa has announced the launch of the country’s first 4G network in partnership with Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN).

The agreement covers the first phase of 800MHz LTE network roll-out over a period five 5 years from 2014 to 2018, with NSN serving as Elisa’s sole infrastructure provider.

“By utilising the 800MHz frequency band, we can build an extremely fast mobile broadband network in rural areas cost-effectively and provide our customers better coverage in urban areas,” said Sami Komulainen, VP of Elisa’s mobile network services. “High speed 4G services provide better user experience, for example in video-on-demand services and new possibilities to distance working and video conferencing.”

The deal builds on the companies’ close co-operation for 2G and 3G networks.

“Our successful collaboration with Elisa started well over 20 years ago – in 1991 – with Elisa’s launch of the world’s first commercial GSM network. Now we are taking that collaboration even further, into a whole new world of speed and superior customer experience,” added Petteri Terho, account director at NSN.
