Versatel acquires Hamburg optical-fibre network

German metro player Versatel has finalised the acquisition of Telefónica Germany’s optical fibre network in Hamburg.

The acquisition is part of a co-operation deal between the two operators which will increase the length of Versatel’s fibre infrastructure from approximately 52,000km to 93,000km.

In return, Telefónica will gain long-term access to the Versatel network, enabling it to connect its UMTS and LTE base stations to fibre infrastructure, improving the companies' existing collaboration in landline and mobile communications.

The deal also strengthens Versatel’s position as an infrastructure and telecommunications provider for business and wholesale clients, particularly in northern Germany.

Versatel now also offers a strong network in Hamburg. It has its own network infrastructure in 33 of the 50 largest cities in Germany.

The announcement coincided with the start of the LambdaNet forum in Frankfurt.
