AIS boosts 3G investment

Thai operator AIS has increased its investment in 3G for the 2013-2015 period from 70 billion baht to 90 billion baht ($2.7 billion), according to local reports.

AIS is rolling out a nationwide 3G network and Somprasong Boonyachai, chairman of the executive committee at InTouch, AIS’s parent company, confirmed yesterday that the company was increasing its investment in the project.

The operator is utilising spectrum in the 2.1GHz band and expects to deliver 3G to 90% of the Thai population in 2014, reaching 97% by 2015.

In June last year, AIS told local reporters that it was placing an increased focus on 3G mobile data speeds, and this year the company is reportedly looking to grow its existing businesses, including its AIS mobile flagship.

Somprasong also said that AIS is planning to bid for an 1800MHz LTE licence in an auction set for later in 2014.
