Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile US to swap airwaves

Leading US player Verizon Wireless has partnered with T-Mobile US to exchange airwaves throughout the country.

The deal to swap licences in the 1.7/2.1 GHz and 1.9 GHz band in a bid to solidify spectrum positions is still subject to approval by US regulator, the Federal Communications Commission.

The deal will allow the carriers to better align newly acquired spectrum with their current holdings, allowing greater efficiency in deploying services.

The deal is about tidying up the carriers’ spectrum, so that their airwaves are not in scattered patches, said Walt Piecyk, an analyst with BTIG LLC in New York.

News of the swap follows rumours that Verizon Wireless is nearing a deal to sell its 700 MHz A Block spectrum to T-Mobile.
