GlobeNet has completed an extension to its subsea network from Colombia to the US. Colombian operator UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones is the anchor tenant on the route, which is expected to address increased demand for capacity in Colombia. [read more]

 

Geo Networks has signed an agreement with Emerald Networks to allow the US-based submarine cable system to extend its connectivity to London, UK. Emerald connects North America to Ireland and Iceland via its Emerald Express submarine cable, and the agreement with Geo will allow Emerald physically diverse routes between Dublin, Ireland, and London, UK, on Geo’s East-West subsea system. Alcatel-Lucent has signed an agreement with Belgian transport operator STIB for the deployment of a broadband network in the country’s capital, Brussels. The city of Brussels has implemented an automated driverless metro system, which will increase train frequency from 24 trains an hour to 40, and Alcatel’s fibre-optic network is designed to carry all operational traffic for the system. Vodafone Ireland has launched 4G services in six cities and 31 towns across the country. The company has enabled 4G in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and Kilkenny, with a roll-out planned for additional areas across the country in the coming months. [read more]

 

High-bandwidth infrastructure provider Zayo has partnered with SSE Telecoms to provide the company with a dark fibre backhaul network and an additional PoP in the UK. The agreement supports SSE Telecoms’ plan to extend its network coverage to every major business district in the country. [read more]

 

BT has announced it has renewed and extended its network equipment hosting contract with Telefónica Deutschland. The UK-based operator will provide Telefónica with hosting capacity in 17 locations throughout Germany, covering some of the network equipment – such as routers and servers – that form the core of Telefónica’s German mobile network. US telco AT&T is planning to extend the roll-out of its high-speed fibre-optic broadband service to additional cities in the US, following its launch in Austin, Texas, according to CEO Randall Stephenson. AT&T’s first gigabit fibre-optic broadband network, which the company claims is 100 times faster than standard broadband internet access, is set to launch in Austin this week, and will coincide with a similar launch planned by Google in the city. Vodafone Spain is reportedly trialling LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology in Madrid. The company is using spectrum in the 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands and is in the pilot phase of the trials, according to a local newspaper. [read more]

China Telecom has selected French vendor Alcatel-Lucent as one of its three suppliers for its trial 4G LTE mobile network. Through the partnership, Alcatel will provide 9,892 base stations for China Telecom’s deployment of LTE-TDD and LTE-FDD technologies in 12 provinces in China. [read more]

Telstra has become the latest carrier to explore LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology, after it tested speeds of 300Mbps on its 4G network in collaboration with Ericsson. Using Ericsson’s LTE-A software, Telstra combined 20MHz of 1800MHz spectrum with 20MHz of 2600MHz to achieve the higher download speeds. [read more]
