Verizon to acquire EdgeCast Networks

US telecoms conglomerate Verizon is reportedly in the process of acquiring CDN provider EdgeCast Networks.

A deal is expected to be announced in the next few days and could be worth more than $350 million, sources told a local newspaper.

Verizon would be likely to combine the Los-Angeles based firm with its own global network platform, COMMA, to enhance its position in the CDN market.

EdgeCast’s client list includes companies such as Twitter, Pinterest and Hulu, and a successful deal could help to boost Verizon’s enterprise business, which has lagged behind its wireless sector over the last year.

Verizon acquired digital media streaming company UpLynk in November this year, and sources expect the combination of UpLynk and EdgeCast to enable Verizon to deliver a more end-to-end offering for streaming video services.

In September this year, EdgeCast partnered with Taiwan-based HiNet to provide web services in the country, and in November, the company received the award for best CDN provider at Capacity’s Global Carrier Awards for the second year in a row.
