GlobeNet completes route to Colombia

GlobeNet has completed an extension to its subsea network from Colombia to the US.

Colombian operator UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones is the anchor tenant on the route, which is expected to address increased demand for capacity in Colombia.

The extension, which lands on Colombia’s Atlantic coast and links to Miami, was deployed by Alcatel-Lucent and is said to support 100Gbps.

“We have a strong focus on serving the Latin America region and are committed to supporting Colombia’s growth and development of its ICT infrastructure. GlobeNet is pleased to enter into a strategic agreement with UNE, which is pioneering 4G/LTE and IPTV deployments [in Colombia] and will benefit from unsurpassed international capacity to service their growing customer base,” said Erick Contag, president and COO of GlobeNet.

GlobeNet claims it is the lowest latency route from Colombia to Brazil.

Earlier this year, Brazilian operator Oi agreed the sale of its subsidiary GlobeNet to Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual, for $772 million.
