Alcatel-Lucent and Australian network services provider Nextgen have successfully completed a 400Gbps data transmission field trial in the country. The trial was conducted over an existing 350km optical link between Sydney and Canberra, carrying live network traffic via Nextgen’s high-capacity 100G transport network. [read more]

 

Ethiopian state-owned operator Ethio Telecom has selected Huawei to roll out a 4G network across the national capital, Addis Ababa. The service is part of a $1.6 billion deal signed between July and August between Ethio Telecom, Huawei and ZTE Corporation to expand mobile services across the country. [read more]

 

Geo Networks has partnered with global technology firm EXFO to implement its network quality management system (NQMS). EXFO’s NQMS will replace Geo’s existing remote fibre test system (RFTS), and is designed to centrally manage its national optical-fibre network. [read more]

 

Two Colombian mobile operators have launched 4G LTE services in the country. Telefónica subsidiary Movistar and Millicom-backed Tigo are now offering the service based on LTE mobile broadband in Bogota, Medellin, Barranquilla and Bucaramana. [read more]

 

AMS-IX has announced its first customer of AMS-IX New York – US internet television network, Netflix. The agreement is also a first for Netflix which had not connected to an internet exchange established under the Open-IX initiative before. [read more]

 

Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs has revealed the results of a survey, indicating that data traffic on metro access and aggregation networks is set to increase 560% by 2017. Colt has extended its SIP trunking service offering, Colt VoIP Access, to include advanced security and disaster-recovery functions. The European operator is offering encryption to secure voice calls, which is said to provide customers with protection from attacks including eavesdropping and interception. [read more]
