Orange rumoured to be entering Canadian mobile market

Orange Horizons has reportedly said it is interested in entering the Canadian mobile market, possibly through the launch of an MVNO.

Unnamed sources are said to have told local newspaper The Globe and Mail that the company is not interested in making large investments in spectrum, but could examine options such as launching an MVNO.

Since then, Canadian business publication BNN has said that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has held “exploratory talks” with the French operator.

The potential move would be welcomed by the Canadian government, which has made attempts to remove restrictions on investment in Canadian telecoms by foreign companies.

Despite this, the potential sale of Canadian operator Allstream to Accelero Capital Holdings – the equity firm controlled by Egyptian tycoon Naguib Sawiris – was rejected by the Canadian government in October, due to unspecified security concerns.
