China Mobile conducts VoLTE network trial

China Mobile has conducted a demonstration of international HD voice and video calls between China Mobile’s VoLTE trial networks in Chengdu and Hangzhou, in partnership with Huawei.

The companies have already implemented a VoLTE network in South Korea, and China Mobile VP Li Zhengmao held a special meeting to demonstrate the world’s first international VoLTE call from South Korea to TD-LTE and FDD LTE networks in China.

It marks China Mobile’s efforts to accelerate VoLTE commercialisation and TD-LTE internationalisation.

“China Mobile attaches great importance to VoLTE development,” Li said.

“In June of this year, China Mobile’s president, Li Yue, released a VoLTE white paper stating that China Mobile will achieve VoLTE commercialisation by the end of 2014. This VoLTE voice and video interaction has great strategic significance and will help further promote support of the VoLTE solution in the global LTE industry,” he added.

The interaction between three cities in two countries displayed clear voice call quality and indicated smooth video streams.

The demonstration between China Mobile’s trial network in Hangzhou and a network in South Korea was observed through Huawei’s multimedia conference system in Chengdu.

China Mobile is rapidly deploying TD-LTE in China, but the company is experiencing a range of issues regarding the global interoperability of TD-LTE services – such as international the roaming capability of LTE voice and data, and difficulties with VoLTE interworking across different countries – which must be resolved before the service achieves full internationalisation.

Huawei provides end-to-end VoLTE solutions to help the company move ahead with its commitment to develop the service.

As of November 2013, Huawei has deployed 172 IMS networks worldwide, including 14 VoLTE networks. The company said it would work closely with global operators to develop 4G and bring higher-quality communications worldwide.
