Mobitel and SAP enhance Sri Lankan roaming

Sri Lankan mobile operator Mobitel has selected SAP Mobile Services to broaden its 3G and 4G roaming services in the country.

SAP Mobile Services is a division of Sri Lankan mobile service provider SAP, and the company’s IPX network will allow Mobitel to interconnect with a greater number of mobile service providers worldwide.

Nalin Perera, senior GM of marketing at Mobitel said that thanks to the advent of 3G and 4G services, there has been an exponential growth in the volume of data being consumed over mobile networks.

“Today, customers expect the same level of data connectivity when at home and abroad,” Perera said.

“SAP’s IPX network will connect us to a larger community of service providers... and this will help us mutually enhance our customers’ mobile roaming experience by allowing them to access data over these networks while roaming – and vice versa.”

The partnership with SAP is also expected to increase connectivity across south Asia and allow other operators in the region to extend their international reach.

Matthew Tonkin, VP of IPX at SAP Mobile Services, said: "Sri Lanka's telecommunications industry, especially its mobile telephony sector, is one of the more evolved in the region, offering 4G LTE services ahead of its regional peers.”

Rival mobile operator in Sri Lanka, Dialog Axiata, secured a 4G spectrum licence in the country in March this year, and in July, the company agreed an infrastructure deal with the nation’s investment arm for ICT infrastructure to upgrade its 3G and 4G networks.
