Movistar launches 4G in Chile

Telefónica subsidiary Movistar has commercially launched its 4G LTE network in Chile.

The telco is using spectrum in the 2.6GHz band in the country and during its press launch, demonstrated download and upload speeds of 95Mbps and 36Mbps, respectively.

Roberto Muñoz, CEO at Movistar, told reporters that the company had invested $1.25 billion in consolidating its 3G network over the last two years.

A further $200 million is expected to be invested in its 4G network over the next three years.

The network will provide national coverage in Chile and is set to rival Claro’s launch of 4G services in Chile in June this year.

The launch falls in line with earlier predictions from Muñoz that the network would be operational before the year end.

Movistar selected vendor Nokia Solutions and Networks as its partner for the LTE roll-out in February this year.
