MTS and Samsung partner to launch 4G LTE-FDD network

Russian operator MTS has partnered with Samsung to launch the company’s first 4G LTE-FDD network in the Northwestern Federal District of Russia.

The roll-out is part of a three-year agreement signed between MTS and Samsung in 2013, and it has been built entirely on Samsung’s LTE network and solutions. It includes the testing of LTE-FDD mobile services in the Pskov region.

LTE services are presently available in Pskov and Velikie Luki, and by the end of the year, the network will span to additional cities in the Pskov region including Ostrov, Nevel, Opochka, Novosokolniki and Pechory.

Further expansion is planned for 2014, with network reach expected to span to St Petersburg, Leningrad, the Arkhangelsk Region and the Komi Republic.

The network roll-out has been built on Samsung’s LTE advanced network solutions and is designed to enable speeds of up to 75Mbps, supporting a wide range of LTE devices including smartphones, tablets and modems.

“As a leader in the Russian telecoms market, we needed an experienced partner to launch our 4G networks. Samsung was our preferred partner as it has vast experience and proven capabilities in deploying large-scale LTE networks,” said Andrei Ushatskiy, VP and CTO at MTS.

“Pskov is the first region in the Russian north west where MTS has launched its LTE and 4G network. It will provide quality and high-speed mobile broadband, which allows users to get access to HD-video on mobile devices, cloud services and VPN.”
