Liberty Global may acquire US pay-TV service

European cable operator Liberty Global is in talks with US chipmaker Intel to acquire its online pay-TV service, three people close to the situation told Bloomberg today.

Liberty Global is planning to utilise Intel’s service outside of the US, but sources said the discussions are still in a very early phase and no financial details have yet been disclosed.

Intel’s pay-TV service is still under development and last month, Verizon was reported to be in talks over its potential acquisition.

Europe is ahead of the US in terms of the development of pay-TV services and Virgin Media – wholly owned by Liberty Global – announced plans earlier this year to offer a Netflix streaming service to customers.

Pay-TV services have been integrated heavily across the globe in 2013, and include a launch of the service in the Cayman Islands by LIME in April this year.
