Level 3 expands global CDN footprint

Level 3 Communications has today announced a groundbreaking expansion to its content delivery network (CDN) in many locations across the globe.

The US conglomerate is set to launch a number of additional PoPs in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, specifically in areas with fast-growing broadband populations.

Level 3 sees a notable market opportunity in these areas and hopes the PoPs – due to be completed by the end of 2013 – will benefit both local and global enterprises.

"Level 3 has a strategic focus around growing its content delivery network to address the ever-increasing globalisation and mobility of entertainment, news and sports content," said Mark Taylor, VP of media and IP services at Level 3.

"This current expansion, along with Level 3's expansion into Latin America in 2012, shows our commitment to providing secure, scalable network resources and solutions for customers around the world to grow their businesses and reach audiences worldwide."

Level 3 will be launching additional PoPs in at least 22 countries in order to address what Taylor described as "astonishing" demand for mobile services worldwide.

"We are building a network for the future of internet consumption and the massive adoption of mobile platforms," he added.

In August, UK gaming firm Mastertronic selected Level 3's CDN solution to enhance its download speeds for users.
