Sprint selects Alcatel-Lucent for US LTE expansion

Sprint has awarded Alcatel-Lucent a contract for the deployment of an ultra-broadband TDD-LTE mobile access network on Sprint’s newly acquired 2.5GHz spectrum in the US.

The TDD-LTE network from Sprint will reportedly be the first time the technology has been nationally deployed in North America and is expected to allow Sprint to significant increase its capacity for customers.

“This is a significant step for Sprint and we continue to grow our network and pursue our goal to offer customers the fastest, most powerful mobile broadband network available anywhere,” said Bob Azzi, SVP of network at Sprint.

“Having worked hand-in-hand with Alcatel-Lucent throughout the network vision and initial 4G LTE roll-out, we have confidence in its technology and its people to help introduce this new era of high-speed broadband access.”

Sprint will deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE solution which includes its RAN, antennas and cabling, as well as its portfolio of professional services.

Last month, China Mobile selected Alcatel-Lucent’s technology for its TDD-LTE roll-out – a technology which forms a part of the French vendor’s debt-reduction Shift Plan, announced earlier this year.

“We have the capabilities and technology to bring about this next step in mobile network evolution,” said Charles Marsh, president of North America sales at Alcatel-Lucent.

“We look forward to supporting Sprint’s vision to greatly expand mobile broadband coverage, with TDD-LTE technologies that will provide customers with a consistent, high-quality experience no matter where they may be.”
