CityFibre deploys Gigabit-speed connectivity to UK town

UK-based infrastructure provider CityFibre has today announced that it will invest up to $30 million in the deployment of a fibre-optic network in Peterborough, UK.

CityFibre will deliver Gigabit-speed connectivity to businesses, carriers, ISPs and the public sector in Peterborough, as well as much larger bandwidth capacity and a superfast user experience.

Peterborough is now set to become one of CityFibre’s “Gigabit towns”, much like Bournemouth, where the company launched Gigabit connectivity in August this year.

Greg Mesch, CEO at CityFibre, said: “Cities, like Peterborough, should have the opportunity to benefit from widespread deployment of fibre infrastructure. This will enable businesses and homes in the city to fully maximise the power of cloud computing, ultrafast broadband, or even glitch-free video conferencing on Google Hangouts or Skype.”

Stage one of the deployment will see CityFibre connect Peterborough’s major commercial district, which includes 4,000 businesses, to the superfast network.

In stage two, the UK firm will roll out the network to 60,000 homes, which, according to Mesch, will confirm Peterborough as a Gigabit city.
