Telenor CEO to chair GSMA

Jon Frederik Baksaas, president and CEO at Norway’s Telenor, has been elected to serve as chairman of the GSMA, the company revealed today.

Norwegian-born Baksaas will replace Franco Bernabè, who resigned from his position as CEO of Telecom Italia earlier this month.

The GSMA, which represents nearly 800 mobile operators across the globe, elected its members for the term in December last year, and Baksaas will take on the role of chairman until December 2014.

“I look forward to working closely with the rest of the board, the GSMA team and our entire membership to advance important industry issues,” said Baksaas.

Baksaas has worked in the telecoms industry for 25 years and will oversee the GSMA’s strategy to connect even more of the world’s population to mobile internet services.

Anne Bouverot, director general of the GSMA, said: “We are at a critical juncture in the development of the mobile communications industry, as we see an ever-increasing number of people, devices and things becoming connected by mobile.”

“I am looking forward to working with Jon Fredrik and the entire GSMA Board to develop global and regional programmes that will drive future growth and investment in mobile services, and deliver the social and economic benefits that mobile can provide to men and women around the world,” she added.

In June this year, the GSMA launched an online portal designed to allow operators to monitor certain areas or firms in the industry more closely.
