NTT Communications to acquire Virtela

Japanese telecoms company NTT Communications will acquire Virtela Technology Services and one other US-based cloud-computing firm, a statement revealed today.

NTT will reportedly spend $525 million on Virtela Technology Services, with the unconfirmed second company bringing its total spend to nearly $1 billion, in a bid to increase its overseas investments.

The acquisition of Virtela – shortlisted for Best Market Innovation in Capacity’s Global Carrier Awards last year – is expected to allow NTT to offer data services worldwide without having to acquire licences in individual markets.

Akira Arima, CEO of NTT, said: “Virtela is well known for its strong technology, networking expertise, global reach and highly regarded services. As we advance our Global Cloud Vision, we expect to continue offering enterprise customers the highest possible value in services ranging from branch office networking to large-scale cloud migration.”

Virtela’s service activation and management infrastructure will further enhance NTT’s network in nearly every country where it is present, and the acquisition is expected to increase NTT’s service coverage from 160 to more than 190 countries worldwide.

NTT has placed a heavy focus on cloud services this year and earlier in June; the company launched its own SDN-based cloud services in Japan.
