Pacnet expands data centre services in China

Pacnet plans to launch data centre network services in Chongqing, China, after securing an Internet Data Center (IDC) licence from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The carrier becomes the first foreign-invested company to have been issued an IDC license in the Chinese region.

The licence will enable Pacnet to expand its data centre network footprint in China, where it presently has PoPs in Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Xi'an.

"Chongqing is the most important megacity in south west China and a very important hub for Pacnet's data centre network, not only throughout China, but also the rest of the Asia-Pacific region," said Henry Lam, CEO of the company’s equity joint venture in China, Pacnet Business Solutions (PBS).

Pacnet's Tier-III data center in Chongqing is said to hold 2,000 racks of carrier-neutral co-location for service providers and businesses in the region.

"This new IDC licence provides us with the ability to expand our data centre footprint, to complement our highly reliable internet bandwidth and IPVPN services both in and out of the region," added Lam.
