EE’s Q3 results boosted by 4G

British mobile operator EE has added half a million customers to its 4G service in the third financial quarter of this year, Reuters reports.

EE now has 1.2 million 4G subscribers, which is up 72% from the second quarter. The announcement comes four months ahead of its original target date for 1 million subscribers.

EE’s 4G service operates in 117 towns and cities across the UK and the operator told local reporters that these figures establish it as Europe’s fastest-growing 4G operator.

However, the demand for 4G services did not save the company from a 345,000 overall customer-base loss, as customers moved to cheaper pay-as-you-go services.

This drop meant service revenue was down 3.3% quarter-on-quarter for Q3, but this was an improvement on the 4.4% quarter-on-quarter drop for Q2.

Until August this year, EE was the only UK company operating a 4G network, but Vodafone and O2 have since launched their own 4G offerings.
