TransTeleCom (TTK) has commercially launched its 100G network in Russia, in collaboration with equipment vendor Cisco. TTK has launched its 100G Ultra-Long-Haul (ULH) wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) network on the St Petersburg-Moscow and Moscow-Chelyabinsk-Yekaterinburg routes, claimed to be the world's longest data transfer segment in landline networks. Independent telecoms infrastructure operator, Metrofibre Networx (MFN), has selected Ciena's packet networking solutions to support its enhanced Ethernet managed-bandwidth service offering. South Africa's MFN delivers managed-bandwidth services from 2Mbp to 1Gbps between customer and service provider and owns an open-access metro Ethernet network. [read more]

 

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) has used its advanced radio platform to upgrade Vodacom Tanzania's GSM and 3G networks. NSN is the sole supplier to Vodacom Tanzania and its single RAN (radio access network) is expected to deliver greater call quality and faster data services to Vodacom Tanzania customers. Alcatel-Lucent and Zain KSA have announced the completion of an Agile Optical Network in Saudi Arabia, following a successful trial. The fibre-optic backbone network is designed to deliver ultra-broadband across the country via converged wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical transport (OTN) technology. [read more]

 

GTA, a Guam-based telecommunications provider, has launched its 4G LTE network in the northern and central regions of the country. The 4G services are available in the villages of Agana (Hagåtña), Agana Heights, Asan, Agat, Barrigada, Chalan Pago, Dededo, Mangilao, Sinajana, Tamuning, Tumon and Yigo, which have been highlighted as areas where most 3G data traffic occurs. PCCW Global has signed an agreement with network services provider Lightower to establish Ethernet international interconnectivity (E-NNIs) between their respective networks. The partnership will enable both companies to leverage network footprint and offer end users additional networking solutions. [read more]

 

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) has extended its long-term partnership with UK-based Juniper Networks to include secure IP connectivity for mobile broadband networks. The companies are now jointly able to deliver reliable IP connectivity solutions to allow operators to meet the low-latency and high capacity requirements of LTE networks. [read more]

 

Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities (MBC) has successfully completed a $20 million project to connect over 120 K-12 schools in southern Virginia, US. The project – funded with $16 million from the US Department of Commerce's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) and $4 million from the Virginia Tobacco Commission – finished $1 million under budget. Infinera and Brocade have announced the successful demonstration of multi-layer network optimisation using software defined networking (SDN) technology. The companies collaborated with the US Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) for the trial, which shows how SDN can be used to increase and reroute data centre-to-data centre traffic, according to demand. Alcatel-Lucent has launched a new fibre-based broadband access solution designed to help operators deliver greater capacity. The Ethernet Passive Optical Networking (EPON) solution can be integrated into existing cable access and is said to help MSOs deliver high-capacity data for businesses. [read more]
