NSN to provide location-based services to NTT DoCoMo

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) has partnered with NTT DoCoMo to provide the Japanese company with location-based services.

The move has been made to cater to the growing number of smartphone users, with demand for navigation and location based services growing in the market.

NSN said operators face the challenge of providing enough visible GPS satellites to meet their positioning requirements, and the company will aim to implement its A-GLONASS positioning technology to serve the demand.

“Location-based services are clearly important to customers,” said Hiroshi Nakamura, Managing Director of Core Network Development Department at NTT DoCoMo. “In future, our customers will be able to enjoy location-based services even in places where buildings are packed closely together.”

By adopting the A-GLONASS positioning technology, NSN said the number of visible GPS satellites can be supplemented by A-GLONASS satellites, thus improving the positioning success rate.

Michael Clever, VP, voice and IP transformation at NSN added: “We built the A-GLONASS solution to address the increasing customer need for personalised, high-accuracy positioning services, especially in densely inhabited locations. High-end positioning services also offer an opportunity for new revenue sources for operators.”
