British incumbent BT has launched its BT City Fibre Network in Paris, France and the surrounding suburbs. The network consists of three fibre loops and is designed to deliver speeds of up to 10Gbps to data centres and the majority of business centres in the area. [read more]  

 

NTT Communications (NTT Com) has extended its global IP network footprint into Indonesia, with the launch of two PoPs in the country's capital, Jakarta. via its Tier-1 IP network, NTT Com will deliver IPv4 and IPv6 dual-stack access to domestic internet service and content providers, as well as foreign firms providing internet services to Indonesia. India-based Bharti Airtel has announced the launch of the Africa Connect network which aims to better Africa's connectivity with the rest of the world. Africa Connect is designed to enhance data capacity across the continent and operates through a network of integrated fibre and satellite capabilities, with 42 PoPs across 17 African countries. Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) is upgrading and expanding its subsea cable network in the Bahamas, in partnership with Huawei Marine Optix. The expansion plans are designed to enable the launch of CWC's broadband-enabled services portfolio, which includes services such as internet shopping, online education and telemedicine. UK-based Vodafone and three operators in the Gulf are planning to launch a 1,400km fibre network in the region, as part of a consortium to meet rising demand for broadband services. Vodafone, along with Kuwait's Zain, UAE-based du and Kuwaiti ISP Zajil, are planning to create a Middle East-Europe Terrestrial System (MEETS) to increase overland connectivity to Europe. UK-based Zamir Telecom is to expand its wholesale VoIP network into Africa, following increased demand from its customers in the region. The company has signed its first agreement for the expansion with Nigerian interconnect exchange carrier Exchange Telecom, and has opened an office in Nairobi, Kenya. [read more]

 

Sea Fibre Networks – owner of the CeltixConnect network – and Hong Kong-based Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) have announced an expansion of the METRO2C Alliance, extending the network from Europe to Asia. HGC has integrated its four cross-border routes with mainland China's Tier-1 telecoms operators, and the collaboration provides US and European multinationals and organisations with extensive access to the digital markets of Asia-Pacific through a single source. Alcatel-Lucent has won a tender to upgrade Bezeq Israeli Telecommunication's network across Israel, according to local reports. The upgrade is designed to deliver 100Mbps internet connectivity to the majority of its customers across Israel. [read more]  

 

Deutsche Telekom has completed multi-vendor interoperability on a 100GbE long-haul DWDM link on its TeraStream pilot network in Croatia. The TeraStream pilot network was first launched in December 2012 through Deutsche Telekom's Croatian subsidiary, Hrvatski Telekom, and the link is implemented using a common standard developed by Deutsche Telekom, Cisco Systems, Alcatel-Lucent and Cortina Systems. Network specialist Ciena has launched several additions to its packet network solutions portfolio, designed to help operators accelerate the adoption of 10GbE services. The new solutions are designed to change the economics of metro packet aggregation, and deliver cost, power and footprint benefits to operators as 10GbE becomes the norm. [read more]

AT&T has confirmed plans to increase internet service speeds in Austin, Texas, from December this year, in a bid to compete with Google's plans to launch internet and TV services in the city. With a population of 840,000, the city is renowned for operating a technology hub, and AT&T plans to offer 300Mbps services in December, set to increase to 1Gbps by mid-2014. [read more]
